Position Details

  • Position: Housekeeping and Laundry Aide
  • Department: Housekeeping and Laundry
  • Union: CUPE
  • FTE: 0.5
  • Anticipated Shift: Days, Weekends
  • Daily Hours Worked: 7.75 Hours
  • Annual Base Hours: 2015
  • Shift Time: 7:00 AM – 3:15 PM

Rotation Schedule:

  • Week 1: Friday, Saturday
  • Week 2: Sunday, Thursday, Friday

Key Responsibilities

Housekeeping Duties:

  • Perform daily cleaning duties throughout the facility according to established routines and procedures.
  • Carry out specialized cleaning duties when necessary to facilitate resident admissions, transfers, or similar occurrences.
  • Clean specialized equipment and areas, including kitchen ventilation hoods and kitchen floors, according to established routines.
  • Empty waste receptacles and wash them as required; dispose of garbage from soiled utility rooms and other assigned areas to the garbage room.
  • Dispose of garbage from the garbage room to the outside garbage bin daily, at the beginning and end of shifts, or as required.
  • Report concerns to the Manager of Support Services related to facility safety, faulty mechanical equipment, electrical issues, structural concerns, or any other issues discovered during daily duties.
  • Participate in Fire Safety Programs and other educational, training, and activity programs as assigned.
  • Maintain janitorial closets, cleaning carts, and all housekeeping equipment in a clean, safe, and organized manner.
  • Assist in Resident Activity Programs such as barbecues, teas, garage sales, Christmas events, etc.
  • Move furniture to facilitate proper cleaning.
  • Wash interior and exterior windows as assigned.

Laundry Duties:

  • Move Floor Linen Carts to and from the basement for filling and washing according to established routines.
  • Replenish Floor Linen Carts as required.
  • Ensure Selkirk Linen Carts are rotated under the Laundry Chute to prevent jams.
  • Bring soiled personal laundry bags from the 1st and 2nd floors at the beginning and end of shifts as required.
  • Perform daily laundry duties including collection, weighing, recording, sorting, washing, drying, folding, hanging, minor repairs, and touch-up ironing of resident clothing.
  • Operate commercial washers and dryers safely.
  • Apply clothing labels to resident clothing using a heat seal machine.

Resident Care Support:

  • Respond to call lights and obtain assistance for residents as required.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living that may include serving and cleaning up meals and nourishments, and transporting.
  • Intervene as required to ensure the safety of residents.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work within the framework of Golden Links Lodge’s Mission, Vision, and Values, following all policies and procedures.
  • Respect Residents’ Rights and privacy at all times.
  • Communicate regularly with the Lead Hand – Housekeeping and Laundry, Manager of Support Services, and co-workers regarding daily activities, projects, and long-term goals.
  • Demonstrate respect for residents, their family members, visitors, and belongings.
  • Work as part of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of Grade 10 education is required.
  • One (1) year current Housekeeping experience in a Long Term Care setting (or commercial cleaning experience with similar responsibilities) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS applicable to Housekeeping and knowledge of departmental cleaning products is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the safe operation of cleaning equipment used at Golden Links Lodge is preferred.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend fluent English is required.
  • Ability to carry out duties professionally, working with minimum supervision and in compliance with confidentiality requirements.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Good physical and mental health to meet position requirements, including the ability to climb ladders and work from them.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Clean, neat appearance in accordance with dress code.
  • All hires require a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) and Adult Abuse Registry Check (current within six months of start date).
  • Understands and respects residents’ rights and privacy.
  • Presents a courteous, cooperative, and professional manner to both residents and staff.
  • Good organizational skills with ability to adapt to changing needs.
  • Promotes a homelike atmosphere within the Lodge.

Machines and Equipment

The Housekeeping and Laundry Aide must be knowledgeable regarding the safe use and maintenance of:

  • Cleaning carts, vacuums, floor polishers, carpet cleaner, auto scrubber, mop systems, window washing wands
  • Washers, dryers, heat sealer (clothing labeling)
  • Other related equipment for housekeeping and laundry purposes

Selection Process

  • Screening: Candidates will be pre-screened based on education and experience. Eligible candidates will be interviewed.
  • English Proficiency Test: Candidates will be required to complete an English language test (Writing, Reading, Listening, and Speaking).
  • References: At least three (3) professional references will be required and checked prior to hiring.
  • Skills Assessment: Interviewed candidates may be called upon to participate in a skills assessment.

Important Notes

  • This term position may end earlier as outlined in the collective agreement.
  • Employees are not permitted to hold two or more positions across the WRHA legal entity that combine to equal more than 1.0 EFT.
