Civil Machinery Operator Jobs In New Zealand

Grounds and Services (GSL) is seeking experienced Civil Machinery Operators to join our growing civil construction team in Christchurch. This is a full-time, hands-on role working across a variety of civil construction, earthworks, and stormwater projects. Reporting to the Site Manager, you will be responsible for operating a range of civil machinery while supporting site activities and maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and teamwork. About the Role

As a Civil Machinery Operator with GSL, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality civil construction projects across Christchurch. You’ll operate a range of modern earthmoving equipment, working across various sites including subdivisions, stormwater basins, and waterway enhancements. This is a hands-on role that requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork. You’ll work closely with your team to ensure projects are completed on time and to the highest standards.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Operating a range of modern earthmoving equipment including excavators, loaders, off-road dump trucks, bulldozers, and skid steer loaders.
  • Working across various sites including subdivisions, stormwater basins, and waterway enhancements.
  • Carrying out bulk earthworks, final trim, drain laying, truck loading, and general earthworks.
  • Using machinery GPS systems and site plans to ensure work meets contract specifications.
  • Conducting daily pre-start checks and basic maintenance.
  • Operating machinery safely across varying weather conditions and terrains.
  • Assisting with general construction labouring tasks as required.

What You’ll Bring

  • Class 2 licence with WTR is essential.
  • Class 4 licence is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience with civil machinery, especially diggers, loaders, and dumpers.
  • Strong understanding of health and safety regulations on-site.
  • A positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and the ability to work well with others is essential.

About Our Divisions

  • Civil Construction Team: Delivering earthworks, drainage, roading, sports fields, stormwater treatment facilities, waterway enhancements, and drainage improvements.
  • Open Spaces Division: Offering roadside mowing, chemical spraying, pest plant control, landscaping, mass native planting, hydro seeding, and high amenity sports turf maintenance.
  • Mechanical Workshop: Supporting all areas of the business and external clients with repair and maintenance of vehicles and machinery, welding, and fabrication.

Important Information

Only applicants that possess a NZ Class 2 Licence with WTR and are living and working in New Zealand will be considered for this position. You will also be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and a background check.
