Key Responsibilities
- Read water utility meters for commercial and residential customers accurately, recording readings legibly and consistently.
- Maintain records on standard forms to ensure proper billing, documenting all readings and any irregularities observed.
- Complete work orders to turn on and turn off water service for new customers, disconnections, and reconnections as directed.
- Check for dysfunctional meters and report any defects to the supervisor for further action or replacement.
- Run re checks on meters in question to verify accuracy and resolve billing discrepancies.
- Perform final readings for customers requesting disconnection and turn water services on for new customers.
- Disconnect water services to delinquent customers in accordance with city policies and procedures.
- Remove dysfunctional meters and install new meters as necessary, ensuring proper function and accurate recording.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the utility department’s operations.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is required along with one year of related work experience. Knowledge of water meter functions and billing methods is essential. Candidates must have knowledge of safety regulations, the city water systems, and the location of city streets and meters. Skill in operating a hand held meter reading unit is required. Strong oral and written communication skills along with the ability to respond effectively to the public are essential. Candidates must be able to observe meter activity accurately, record readings legibly, and make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately. A valid State of Georgia Driver’s License is required; a CDL is preferred.
Physical Demands
This position requires light physical work with exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Physical abilities required include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work involves moving about on foot for long distances, ascending and descending ladders and stairs, bending, crouching, and working with hands and fingers to manipulate meter equipment.
