Key Responsibilities
As a Laundry Sorter-Washer, you’ll perform general and specific duties in accordance with Linen & Laundry Department standards of practice, policies, and procedures.
- Unload carts of clean linen and load carts of soiled linen onto trailers.
- Deliver carts of clean linen to patient units and clinics; load bags of soiled linen onto carts and transport carts for return to the service provider for laundering.
- Count previous days’ unused linen and adjust linen orders in accordance with par levels.
- Stock any special linen requests as needed.
- Wash, dry, and fold scrubs, curtains, slings, and other washable items using industrial washers and dryers.
- Restock Scrubex dispensing machines with clean scrubs and remove scrubs for laundering.
- Toronto General Only: Transport carts requiring successful completion of a tow motor training course and licensing (provided by UHN).
- Toronto Western Only: Restock alex linen dispensing machines with clean linens (sheets, towels) on patient care units and in the Emergency Department.
- Follow all Infection Prevention and Control procedures, including hand washing and isolation protocols.
- Wear gloves, isolation gowns, masks (surgical and N95), eye protection, and other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Clean and disinfect equipment with bleach and other cleaning chemicals in accordance with training and procedures while wearing required PPE.
- Perform cross-functional duties as assigned and-or required.
- Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned.
Qualifications
We’re looking for individuals who are physically capable, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining high standards in a hospital environment.
Essential Requirements:
- Minimum completion of high school or recognized equivalent.
- Ability to be on feet (standing and walking) for long periods of time.
- Ability to push and pull carts weighing up to 23 kg.
- Simple mathematical calculation skills (adding and subtracting).
- Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner, producing high-quality work while meeting deadlines.
- Exercise initiative and good judgment with the ability to multi-task.
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements under UHN Privacy Policy.
- Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of applicable legislative, UHN, and/or departmental policies.
- Client service oriented, with the ability to work effectively with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds, and characteristics bring richness to the challenge at hand.
- Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job.
Site-Specific Requirements:
- Toronto General Only: Ability to successfully complete tow motor training program and obtain a license to safely transport linen carts (training provided by UHN).
Experience:
- Less than 3 months of practical and related experience and/or less than 1 month of on-the-job training required.
Physical Demands
- Standing and walking for long periods.
- Pushing and pulling carts weighing up to 23 kg.
- Ability to meet all physical requirements of the position.
