Here is an opportunity to serve as an Aircraft Sheet Metal Mechanic with the federal government, where you will plan, lay out, fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install complex aircraft sheet metal parts and assemblies. You will also perform the full range of painting duties, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, and coating various surfaces. Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and lay out work for manufacturing aircraft sheet metal parts and components with combined straight and curved edges, irregular angles, planes, and curves.
  • Fabricate, modify, repair, assemble, and install complex aircraft sheet metal parts and assemblies.
  • Perform the full range of painting duties, including surface preparation, blending and matching paints, and coating various surfaces.
  • Examine aircraft sheet metal structures to locate cracks, breaks, holes, bulges, dents, and loose or missing rivets.
  • Determine the type and extent of repairs needed to restore original strength.
  • Make repairs by manufacturing and installing new parts and reinforcing, patching, and replacing defective parts.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications.
  • Use complicated measuring instruments such as protractors, calipers, snap ring, height, depth, dial, and screw pitch gauges.
  • Operate a wide variety of hand and power tools, including crimping, burring, turning, and bending machines, soldering and welding machines, and painting tools.
  • Use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions.
  • Follow all safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements.

Qualifications and Job Elements

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3800, Metal Work Group, Sheet Metal Mechanic. The screen-out element for this position is the ability to do the work without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  1. Knowledge of the characteristics and properties of metals used in the trade (stainless steel, magnesium, alloys); advanced shop mathematics and principles of radial-line and parallel-line development; trade practices, surface preparation and coating methods, paints and thinning additives.
  2. Knowledge of safety and environmental standards, regulations, and requirements.
  3. Skill in planning and laying out work; using complicated measuring instruments; selecting and applying proper coating materials; using hand and power tools and painting equipment.
  4. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, diagrams, sketches, and technical specifications.
  5. Ability to examine aircraft sheet metal structures, determine repair needs, and make repairs.
  6. Ability to use computer terminals to maintain records and document actions.

Physical Effort and Working Conditions

Physical Effort:

  • Work encompasses strenuous physical exertion when bending and shaping complex or bulky items.
  • Moderate physical exertion including prolonged standing; climbing ladders and scaffolding; working in cramped and awkward positions; reaching, lifting, and bending.
  • Weight lifted seldom exceeds 50 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • Works both inside and outside, subjected to moderate noise and vibration from shop machines and various weather conditions.
  • Subject to cuts, bruises, falls, and burns.
  • Required to wear safety glasses when performing eye hazardous operations.

Important Information

Part-time or Unpaid Experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Volunteer Work Experience: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service Programs and other organizations. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education: This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

Salary

Competitive Pay: Earn between $15.00 – $19.00 per hour, based on experience.
