Cafe FOH And Barista Needed In New Zealand

A cafe that is also the public face of a coffee roastery. That means customers come not just for a flat white, but to experience the passion behind the beans. They want to try your coffee, take some beans home, and leave feeling like they understand what makes this business different. A Christchurch based coffee company is looking for a passionate front of house and barista person to serve their wonderful customers. You need cafe experience and barista skills, plus high paced energy to keep up with a busy team. The best part? The cafe is closed on weekends and public holidays, plus a decent break over Christmas. If you are serious about great coffee and a long term career in the industry, read on.

About the Company

This business is a coffee roastery with a public facing cafe in Christchurch. They source, roast, and sell specialty coffee beans. The cafe is where people can visit, try the latest brews, and connect with the team. The company values quality, education, and genuine hospitality. They believe in work life balance, which is why they close on weekends and holidays. For a barista who wants to grow their knowledge of bean origins, flavour profiles, and brewing methods, this is a dream role.

What You Will Do Every Shift

You will serve and interact with customers warmly, making every person feel welcome. You will make espresso based beverages to a high standard, adjusting grind and dose as needed. You will use soft brew methods such as filter, pour over, or Aeropress, and explain these to curious customers. You will share your knowledge of bean origin and characteristics, helping customers choose the right coffee to take home. You will prepare and serve cafe food such as toasties, pastries, or light meals. You will work with the cafe manager to meet Food Safety standards, including temperature checks, cleaning logs, and allergen management. You will keep the front of house area tidy, restock cups and milk, and handle cash or card payments. You will also help with basic equipment cleaning at the end of each shift. You will work as part of a small, energetic team that loves coffee as much as you do.

What We Are Looking For

You need experience in a cafe environment, ideally with at least one year as a barista. Barista skills are essential, including dialling in an espresso machine and pouring basic latte art. Experience or knowledge of soft brew methods is strongly preferred. Knowledge of bean origin and characteristics such as altitude, processing methods, and flavour notes is a big advantage. You must have high paced energy and enthusiasm to keep up with a busy cafe. You should be reliable, punctual, and able to work quickly without sacrificing quality. Legal right to work in New Zealand is required. No degree is mentioned. You must be physically able to stand for full shifts and lift up to 10 kilograms.

Pay and Benefits

The hourly rate for this role is between NZD 24 and NZD 28 per hour depending on experience. That aligns with current market rates for skilled baristas in Christchurch. The cafe is closed on weekends and public holidays, so you get every Saturday and Sunday off. You also receive a decent break over the Christmas period. That means genuine work life balance, rare in hospitality. You will receive staff discounts on coffee beans and beverages. Training on soft brew methods and coffee origins is provided. There is opportunity to grow within the roastery side of the business over time.
